A Como carpenter who does the small jobs.
I’m Glen. I do the jobs that sit on the fridge list for months, and most lists get done in one visit.
Half-Lap Carpentry & Handyman No. 0417

Tick what needs doing
-
45 min. Most are sorted inside the first hour, without taking the door off.
-
1¼ hrs. Sand in the track flattens the rollers and the door starts to drag. Two new rollers and a clean track.
-
1½ hrs. Re-meshed in your driveway and back in before dark. Pet mesh if the cat’s been at them.
-
1¼ hrs. Double brick needs masonry anchors and a level line. Cables go in a paintable cover. New power points are a sparky’s job.
-
2 hrs. Popped screws and soft boards. Sanding and oiling I quote after a look.
-
3 hrs. Robe shelves, or rebuilding an old jarrah gate.
-
½ hr. Mostly hanging things and flat-pack. $44 a half hour on top of another job; on their own it’s the $95 first hour.
Payment by bank transfer within 7 days.

$95 for the first hour, including getting to you
Then it’s $44 a half hour. Materials are at cost, and the receipts come with the invoice. Four or five little jobs usually take two to three hours, so most visits land between $183 and $271.
I live in Como and keep to jobs about 20 minutes from home: South Perth, Kensington, Salter Point, Victoria Park, and over Canning Bridge to Applecross. Further than that, the drive eats into your first hour.
Monday to Friday 7.30am to 4pm, Saturday 8 till 12. No Sundays.
If I don’t pick up, I’m on the tools. I ring back at lunch and after 4.
How a visit goes
I text when I’m 20 minutes away. A drop sheet goes down before the toolbox comes in, and my boots come off if your floors are the kind that show it. If a job turns out to be a $9 part and ten minutes, I’ll start on the next thing on your list, because you’ve paid for the hour. When I leave, the offcuts and sawdust go with me, and the invoice comes by text that afternoon, with photos of the work.
When a door rubs at the top, I check the top hinge before anything else. Once its screws work loose, the door drops and catches the frame. Two 65 mm screws into the stud and it shuts properly again. I try that before I take a plane to a door, because a planed door stays planed.
I won’t hang a TV on plasterboard with toggles, even a small one. Toggles hold until someone leans on the corner to reach the cables. It goes into a stud or into the brick.
Jobs I’ll pass on
Roofs, gas, power points or plumbing. Also anything big enough to need a registered builder, which in WA means any job over $20,000 that needs a building permit. For all of those I’ll give you the number of someone I’d use myself.
Where I learnt the trade
I did my apprenticeship with a shopfitter in Welshpool and stayed eleven years, mostly night shifts fitting out shops in the city and at Booragoon. In 2021 I’d had enough of nights and started doing the small jobs nobody wanted to come out for.
The name comes from the first joint they had us cut by hand at TAFE. A half-lap is two bits of timber with half the depth taken out of each, so they sit flush. You weren’t finished until you couldn’t catch a fingernail on the join. I still cut one now and then, mostly for gates.
After a visit
Sample reviews. On your site, these are your real Google reviews, linked.
Sample review. “Back door finally locks, and he sorted the robe door while he was there without making a thing of it. Came in a bit over what I’d guessed once the parts went on, but he’d told me that on the day.”
Sample review. “The other two quotes were for a whole new deck. Glen spent ten minutes under it with a torch and said the frame had another twenty years in it.”
Send it through
Jobs you tick on the docket turn up on the yellow copy. Add a note or a measurement if you have one. A photo helps more than a description: text it to 0491 570 158 after you send this.
Asked most weeks
- Do I need to buy the parts?
- No. Tell me the size of the door or the make of the TV and I’ll pick up what’s needed on the way. If you’ve already bought it, I’ll use yours.
- Can you come for just one small job?
- Yes. It’s still the first hour, $95. Most people save up a few and tick them on the docket.
- How soon can you come?
- Usually within a week. A back door that won’t lock gets fitted in the same day or the next.
- Do you give quotes?
- Yes, for anything over about three hours. I’ll come round to measure up, then send a fixed price in writing. I don’t charge for that visit inside my area. Under three hours it’s the hourly rate. If a job is running long, I tell you at the hour mark and you decide whether I keep going.
- Are you insured?
- Yes, public liability to $20 million. I can send the certificate before the visit.
- Do you take the rubbish away?
- Yes, anything from the job, flat-pack cardboard included. Old furniture and green waste I leave for the council verge collection.
